Vodka, Caviar & Poetry

Posted by the Bookshop

Our Author(s) of the Month for March will be the group of poets associated with the Stray Dog Café. Named as such because they saw themselves as "strays', excluded from mainstream society, the Stray Dog Café was a literary hangout for writers and poets in St Petersburg during the early 20th century. Poets such as Anna Akhmatova and Osip Mandelstam gathered there to discuss theories of literature and to perform poetry readings and theatre, whilst enjoying a convivial atmosphere.

We’re commemorating this literary milieu, and creating our own hangout with a Russian themed late shopping evening on Wednesday 2 March, between 6 and 8 p.m..

Terry from the Cake Shop has created her take on a Russian salad, with quail's egg, prawn, cucumber, dill and caviar on traditional rye bread. We'll be serving this alongside ice-cold Russian vodka with a slice of strawberry and a sprinkle of black pepper. (There'll be wine too, for wimps.)

This theme was inspired by the National Portrait Gallery’s upcoming exhibition 'Russia and the Arts', which will look at the dynamic intellectual environment in Russia prior to 1914. They’ve given us two exhibition tickets plus the catalogue to give to one lucky customer – simply register to attend the event and you’ll have the chance to win.

We’ll be offering 10% off everything in store and the opportunity to talk with one of our knowledgeable and helpful booksellers. You can book your tickets here.
