In 2001 mature student Robert Kull decided on a very unusual research project for his PhD thesis: he would maroon himself for a year on an island off the Patagonian coast of Chile so remote that it lacks a name, recording his moods and shifting relationship with the natural world. Freezing temperatures and strong winds would make surviving on the island a struggle for anyone; for Kull, a man in late middle age with a prosthetic leg, the challenge was even greater.
