From Me to You is made up of the love poems that passed between Ursula
Fanthorpe and Rosemarie Bailey during the course of their long and happy
life together. With only a few exceptions, it isn’t possible to tell
which of the couple wrote a particular poem. This is entirely fitting,
and the book, the last that U.A. published during her lifetime, stands
as a remarkable tribute to a remarkable partnership.
Here is ‘The Mineral Lover’:
What do you make of this,
Sweetheart? I, who had been looking
For you all my long life, met
You when I was twenty-eight,
And didn’t even notice. We worked together
For seven casual years, till I discovered
I’d fallen in love with you/when I wasn’t looking.
All very well
For Marvell to talk about vegetable loves, that
Grow vaster than empires and more
Slow. What about me?
