Author of the Month: Shusaku Endo

Our first author of the month for 2017 is the Japanese novelist Shusaku Endo, celebrated by such diverse western voices as Graham Greene (‘Endo to my mind is one of the finest living novelists’) and Martin Scorsese, whose adaptation of Endo’s masterpiece Silence is released this month.

Born in Tokyo in 1923, Endo spent his formative years in Manchuria, and his sense of being an outsider, both nationally and as a Roman Catholic, marks much of his work.
