We Recommend: Pond by Claire-Louise Bennett

Posted by

Claire-Louise Bennett's Pond was a firm shop favourite before it was even published here (we imported the original Stinging Fly edition from Ireland, such was our excitement). If you haven't already read it, you can get a taste of just how good it is from this opening extract from the book, or from the podcast of our event with Claire-Louise in 2015.

But 2015 is a long time ago, and I'm an impatient person, so a few months ago, in a hopeful act of cosmic ordering, I wrote this staff pick:

Not a day goes past that I don't shake a fist at the sky and cry in despair, "When will Claire-Louise Bennett publish something new?!" Until my cries are answered, I'll make do with rereading POND, Bennett's wildly brilliant and totally unique collection of stories following one woman living alone in the Irish countryside.

And it turns out, cosmic ordering works! Brought to you by new Italian art publishing house Juxta Press: a new work by Claire-Louise Bennett! Fish Out of Water is a short exploration of the work of surrealist artist Dorothea Tanning, and I can't wait to read it. We have a few signed copies at the moment – reserve yours here.

Pond by Claire-Louise Bennett is published by Fitzcarraldo Editions. For more of Gayle's recommendations, click here.
