Tomás González was born in Medellín, Colombia in 1950. His first novel In the Beginning was the Sea, a short but powerful account, based on a true story, of youthful idealism confronted and ultimately wrecked by the hard facts of reality, was published in 1983, by the owner of the Bogotá nightclub where González was working as a barman. After many years living in Miami and New York as a translator, González has now returned to his native Colombia. He will be at the shop to read from and discuss his novel, recently published in English for the first time by Pushkin Press.

González will be in conversation with literary translator Frank Wynne. The discussion will be chaired by Catherine Taylor, deputy director of English PEN.
