Mary-Kay Wilmers’s The Eitingons was described when it was first published in 2009 (by Ian Thomson in the Telegraph) as ‘a transfixingly readable amalgam of memoir and history … Mary-Kay Wilmers has assimilated elements of detection, travel, biography, moral essay and personal revelation, and turned the raw material of her family into literature.’ Its recent re-release by Faber coincides with the publication in Moscow of the first Russian translation. Mary Kay Wilmers, editor of the LRB, will be discussing this tangled tale of spies, assassins, fur-traders and psychoanalysts with novelist and journalist Andrew O’Hagan.
