Son of a black father and a white mother, Thomas Chatterton Williams had always thought of himself as black. The experience of becoming a father himself to two apparently white children led him to question many of his, and our, assumptions about race and identity. In his memoir-essay Self-Portrait in Black and White, beautifully written and deeply thought-provoking, he recounts his intellectual and personal journey, a process he describes as ‘unlearning race.’ He will be in conversation about that journey with Johny Pitts, photographer, broadcast journalist and author of Afropean: Notes from Black Europe.
