In light of the continuing coronavirus epidemic, all events and late shopping evenings due to take place in March and April have unfortunately been postponed indefinitely. Please see our blog for more details.
In Sinews of War and Trade (Verso) Laleh Khalili, professor of politics and international studies at SOAS, University of London, explores the vital importance of ports and shipping in defining the new battlegrounds of the 21st century. In particular, she argues, the Arabian Peninsula is the crucial nexus for the transportation of the goods and commodities that define and enable contemporary capitalism, inevitably making it a region of compelling strategic importance and of military and diplomatic conflict.
She will be in conversation about her book with Dr Rafeef Ziadah, who is conducting research on the commerce and politics of the Gulf region at SOAS.
