Author of the Month: Elizabeth Hardwick

Our Author of the Month for July is the American novelist, essayist and critic Elizabeth Hardwick. Born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1916, her career as a critic (following two published novels) began in 1959, with an article in Harper's, ‘The Decline of Book Reviewing.’ In 1962, in the company of Robert Lowell, Jason and Barbara Epstein and Robert B. Silvers she founded the seminal New York Review of Books, from which the LRB itself was to emerge some 17 years later.
