Calling all translators!

Posted by the Bookshop

It's no secret that we're keen on translated literature here at the London Review Bookshop. So it should come as no surprise that we love translators, those wonderful people who enable us to read books from all corners of the globe.

This year, we’re holding a series of Translation Masterclasses with award-winning translators Daniel Hahn, Sarah Ardizzone and Shaun Whiteside. There are sessions for those working from French, Spanish and German into English, as well as sessions which will cover working out of any language into English. We welcome translators of all levels, from novices to professionals – all you need is a good working knowledge of the relevant language.

These intimate workshops will cover a range of topics. You'll explore non-standard language; discuss how to convey slang and colloquialism; get your questions on style and punctuation answered; and find out how to break the rules and get away with it. You’ll also get a chance to meet other translators and get practical advice on opportunities and promotion.

Get inspired with our podcasts: you can listen to Sarah Ardizzone discuss the translation process with author Faïza Guène; Shaun Whiteside going head-to-head with Mike Mitchell in a live translation event; and Daniel Hahn exploring what translation hopes to achieve with Anthea Bell, Anne McLean and Frank Wynne at the British Museum. You can also take a look at translation tips from Sarah, Daniel and Shaun on the English PEN website.
