Jonathan Coe and Stephen Frears present Lindsay Anderson's If....

London Review Bookshop

Jonathan Coe, multi-award winning novelist and declared admirer of the work of Lindsay Anderson, joins the equally garlanded film-maker Stephen Frears (who was Anderson's assistant on this very film) to discuss If...., a masterpiece of British and insurgent cinema.

A modern classic in which Anderson minutely captures both the particular ethos of a public school and the general flavour of any structured community, thus achieving a clear allegorical force without sacrificing a whit of his exploration of an essentially British institution. The impeccable logic of the conclusion is in no way diminished by having been lifted from Vigo's Zéro de Conduite, made thirty-five years earlier. If... was also a timely film - shooting began two months before the events of May 1968 in Paris. - Time Out

The screening is held in memory of the film's writer, David Sherwin, who died earlier this year.

The evening is hosted by Gareth Evans.

Running time: 112 mins
