St. JOHN at the Bookshop

Posted by the Bookshop

Here at the Bookshop, we are long-time fans of doughnuts in general, and St. JOHN doughnuts in particular. Imagine our collective delight when we heard that those doughnuts will be coming to us: in place of our much-missed Cake Shop, we’ll be welcoming the latest branch of the London institution to the Bookshop from Wednesday 1 October.

St. JOHN, the pioneering nose-to-tail restaurant, bakery and winemaker, will be serving a menu that will meander through the day, inspired, as ever, by the philosophy of ‘purpose and simplicity’: open from 8 a.m. for coffee, croissants, Eccles cakes and those doughnuts; at lunchtime, for savoury tarts and sandwiches, alongside their famous baked-to-order madeleines; and on days when we’re open late for an event, they’ll stay open for wine, house cocktails and snacks until 7 p.m.

Trevor Gulliver, co-founder and CEO of St. JOHN, explains how the collaboration came to be: ‘We were curious when the London Review of Books asked us about their café at the Bookshop which was closed, would we come by and take a look? One thing has led to another, the discovery of the hidden square with the little terrace behind the bookstore, the general delight in working with the LRB, its location and the good feeling that an independent bookstore provides to many. We are delighted to announce that we will be opening our small Bloomsbury Cafe on Wednesday 1 October, a small changing menu with good things from the bakery, to enjoy at the table or take away, a short wine list, and a happy adjunct to the joy of browsing and books…. and that little terrace for a glass perhaps too?’

We can’t wait!
