Author of the Month: Arundhati Roy
Selected by the Bookshop
Our Author of the Month for October is the novelist, essayist and activist Arundhati Roy.
Born in Shillong, India, in 1961, Roy began her career as an actor and screenwriter before rocketing to international fame with her novel The God of Small Things, which received the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997 and has remained a bestseller ever since. A second novel The Ministry of Utmost Happiness followed in 2017, but equally notable have been her numerous writings on politics, architecture and culture, many of them collected in My Seditious Heart. 2025 saw the publication of a memoir Mother Mary Comes to Me which focuses on the formative years spent with her formidable mother in Kerala.
Arundhati has said of her work, as writer and activist, ‘I am a person who lives with defeat. It is not about me, it is about the things I have written about – those have been smashed over many times. Should we shut up because nothing is happening? No. We have to keep doing what we do.’
