Maryse Condé

Maryse Condé, our Author of the Month for August, was born in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, the child of a schoolteacher and a bank manager. She came to prominence with her third novel, Segu - a family saga set in the eponymous African kingdom in the 18th and 19th centuries, breaking up under the encroachments of empire. Condé's work has received the Prix de L’Académie Francaise, the Marguerite Yourcenar prize and many other honours; in 2018, during the temporary suspension of the Nobel Prize in Literature, she received the equivalent New Academy Prize.
