Author of the Month: Chester Himes

Our Author of the Month for May is Chester Himes (1909 – 1984). His macabre detective farces are unlike anything else in American literature. His two recurring characters, detectives Coffin Ed Johnson and Grave Digger Jones, are unforgettable enough, but what stays with you longest is his evocation of mid-century Harlem: sharp, hilarious, brutal and rowdy. If you haven’t read him before, the best place to start is with A Rage in Harlem.
